Amanda drives
home from work in heavy rush hour traffic. It’s hot
and the windows are up and the air-conditioner is on full blast, but she
knows it won’t be long before she’ll have to turn it off because the slow
traffic and frequent stopping and idling will soon overheat the engine.
She
sighs. She’s tired and would like to be home soaking in a soothing bath.
It
seems like she’s tired all the time. She fears there is some dread disease
lurking in her body, but after a complete check-up, the doctor had said
there was nothing physically wrong with her. In fact, he had even hinted
that perhaps she just needed a vacation, even though she’d told him about
the headaches, the heart palpitations, the dizzy spells, and the
overwhelming fatigue. Surely there was something wrong with her, but he
had brushed that all aside saying, “everybody gets headaches now and
then, and there’s nothing wrong with your heart.” He’d made Amanda feel
as if he thought it was all in her head. She braked angrily as the traffic
came to another bumper-to-bumper halt.
It was frustrating, and it seemed to be getting progressively worse.
There were days when she could hardly drag herself out of bed to go to
work.. .days when she was literally too tired to think and made really
stupid mistakes. How could she go on like this? Maybe she should see
another doctor. She turned off the air, waited a little while, then
reluctantly
