Joe is a hard
working man, a good family man, and an assistant coach
with his son’s Little League team. His wife, Judy, a checkout clerk at the
local grocery store, is active in the PTA. They are good people. Never in
a
million years would they think there was any way possible that they might
have anything to do with the ultimate destruction of the earth. Yet, they
are key players.
Joe is a lumberjack as was his father and his grandfather before him,
and as he expects his son will be after him. The way he sees it, it’s a
good
decent job. Everybody needs lumber products—builders, businesses,
schools, and manufacturers. It’s a sure thing—almost as sure as death and
taxes. The big forests that his dad worked are pretty much gone, but Joe
figures the government will loosen controls and allow more timber cutting
in protected areas. Well, that’s life. The environmentalist worry about
endangered species like the spotted owl, but darn it, folks need lumber!
What Joe doesn’t realize is that folks need oxygen even more than
lumber, and any additional de-forestation puts us—you and me and Joe—
in the critical position of being the endangered species.
The lumber industry represents one of the oldest and largest industries
in the United States. Lumber is accepted as a necessary element of several
other industries as well, such as construction and papermaking. Both
