Jackson is a
success-oriented young man with a plan. He doesn’t
intend to be poor, and with a young family to support, he spends a lot of
time thinking about the future. He wants his children to grow up in a good
neighborhood and go to the better schools. He wants to provide well for
his wife with a nice car to drive, a country club membership, and at least
an occasional luxury vacation, so he’s working his way up the corporate
ladder and investing in stocks.

atmosphere and drainage pipes flooding chemical wastes into rivers and
streams. To Jackson, those rows of black and white figures are simply an
opportunity to invest in a better future for his family. He’s a player,
but
chooses to stay in the safe zones, so he’s invested primarily in public
utilities. His reasoning? Everybody uses power, and in this
technologically
advanced society, utilities are a sure thing.
He’s right on a number of counts. We are living in an advanced
technological society where everything has become dependent on
electricity. It’s true. From the food we cook or microwave to shaving or
blow-drying our hair to the computers that run banks and businesses...
