Jennifer is busy
researching for the thesis she is writing. Archaeology
is both her major and her passion. She sits at the computer terminal and
stares at the information coming up on the monitor. It’s true, she thinks,
the world is shrinking, getting smaller and smaller every day. With the
advent of the Internet, we really are becoming a global society able to
connect immediately with anyone anywhere in the world.. . and the info
available is mind-boggling. Moving the mouse slowly, she clicks and
reads, clicks and reads, occasionally printing info pertinent to her
thesis.
Finally, she stops, pushes away from the keyboard, and rubs her eyes.
What had started as an overview of civilizations throughout earth’s
history
and their impact on the earth has become a startling and awesome
revelation of the innate power of man to wreak havoc and destruction
everywhere he has settled.
Why does our idea of taming the land and civilizing a place always
mean going in and clearing and bulldozing whatever was there and
building and paving instead? With amazing tenacity and almost genius,
mankind has reached the pinnacles of an idealized society, and each time
that civilization has collapsed.. .not from outer force, but because of
the
society’s abuse of the natural resources upon which wealth had been
built...
