It is Christmas
and the Christmas tree lights seem to glow with joy and
love. A manger scene lit by candles graces the coffee table. Heather rocks
peacefully, looking down into the sleeping face of her precious baby girl
cradled in her arms. She has never known such tenderness and wonder as
she feels each time she holds this precious miracle of life.
She thinks about the conversation she’d had months earlier with her
friend, Carla, an advertising exec, as they lunched in a downtown
restaurant. When she’d told Carla that she was pregnant, Carla had said
matter-of-factly, “You’re not going to have it, are you? I mean, it’ll
spoil
things for you and Richard. No more spontaneous grabbing a toothbrush
and heading for the mountains for a ski weekend, or deciding to suddenly
go out for a midnight pizza.”
It hadn’t even occurred to Heather not to have the baby, but of course,
that had not been an option for her mother or grandmother. She had
glanced around at all the other people in the restaurant and thought about
how we are all probably “accidents.” Many of us wouldn’t be here today if
our parents had had access to the birth control methods and abortions
readily available today. But, Heather just smiled at Carla’s question and
said yes, she wanted to have the baby. Besides, she and Richard were
married now and felt ready to start a family...
