   Father to small boy, “Now, son, I’m going to kick the ball to you, and
you are going to grab it and run down to that end of the field to score a
touchdown.”

Boy, looking up at his dad, “Why can’t I run to this end of the field?
It’s closer.”

Father, “Because this end belongs to the other team. Now, the other
team is going to try to stop you. They’ll grab at you or try to knock you
down, but you don’t let anyone stop you. You just keep going. Okay?”

Boy, stubbornly, “But, if I ran to this end, they wouldn’t be able to
catch me. I run fast!”

Father, with some exasperation, “You’re right son, but that’s not how
the game is played. You have to follow the rules.”

Boy, “Couldn’t we make new rules?”

Father, “Son! This is football! We don’t tamper with anything as
important as football!”

Long ago, when mankind was young and the world a much simpler
place, the rules, or the laws of the universe were common knowledge, and
were understood as the wisdom of God and nature. The cycles of the
moon, the movement of the planets, the seasons, the ways of the earth and
plants and animals, these things were watched and known as a mother
